TLDR Most canine follicular tumors in Croatia are benign, but some can be malignant, so testing is important.
The study investigated the prevalence and types of canine follicular tumours (CFT) in Croatia over a 4-year period (2009-2012), analyzing 714 skin tumours, of which 69 were CFTs. These included 10 infundibular keratinizing acanthomas (IKA), 21 pilomatricomas, 1 malignant pilomatricoma, 12 trichoepitheliomas, 4 malignant trichoepitheliomas, and 21 trichoblastomas. No breed or gender predisposition was found, although pilomatricomas were more common in breeds with continuous hair growth. Most CFTs were benign, but 7.2% were malignant, highlighting the need for histopathological evaluation of keratin-filled skin nodules to prevent malignant spread.
