TLDR Horizontal sectioning helps diagnose hair loss, but Korean follicle differences matter.
The study conducted a morphometric analysis of alopecia areata and androgenetic alopecia in Koreans using horizontal sectioning of scalp biopsies. It involved 21 alopecia areata patients and 13 androgenetic alopecia patients. The results showed significant increases in the numbers of vellus hairs and follicular stellae in both conditions compared to normal scalp, with alopecia areata showing a decreased anagen/telogen ratio and androgenetic alopecia showing a mild decrease. The study concluded that horizontal sectioning is a useful diagnostic method, but differences in follicular counts in Koreans should be considered when interpreting the data.
