TLDR More than half of the women with PCOS in Southern India had Metabolic Syndrome, with large waist circumference being the most common feature.
In 2014, a study was conducted on 45 women diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) in Southern India to determine the prevalence and predictors of Metabolic Syndrome (MBS). The study found that 53.3% of the subjects had MBS. The prevalence of individual components of MBS among PCOS patients were: waist circumference ≥80 cm in 86.6%, High Density Lipoprotein (HDL-C) less than 50 mg/dl in 93.3%, triglycerides ≥150 mg/dl in 37.8%, blood pressure ≥130/85 mmHg in 15.6%, and fasting plasma glucose ≥100 mg/dl in 28.8%. Subjects with MBS had significantly higher Body Mass Index (BMI) compared to those without (P = 0.039). However, fasting insulin and free testosterone levels did not differ significantly between subjects with and without MBS. The study concluded that MBS and its individual components, particularly waist circumference ≥80 cm, were common among PCOS patients, suggesting an immediate need for interventions like lifestyle changes to prevent MBS and other cardiovascular diseases.
