TLDR Skin problems like acne and excess hair in PCOS are common and linked to being overweight.
The document "Cutaneous manifestation of polycystic ovary syndrome" discusses the skin symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), including hirsutism, acne, androgenic alopecia, acanthosis nigricans, and seborrhea, which are primarily due to hormonal imbalances. A study of 146 Jordanian women with PCOS found the most common skin features were acne vulgaris (75.3%), hirsutism (59.6%), seborrhea (43.2%), and androgenetic alopecia (42.5%). All skin manifestations, except for acne, were associated with a higher body mass index (BMI). The study suggests that the presence of these skin features, especially in overweight and obese patients, should alert physicians to the possibility of PCOS. A multidisciplinary approach involving a gynecologist, dermatologist, endocrinologist, psychiatrist, and nutritionist is recommended for proper management.
