TLDR Minoxidil promotes hair growth but stops working when discontinued.
The study found that topical minoxidil stimulated hair growth in bald stump-tailed macaques by increasing the number and size of hair follicles and maintaining the duration of growth in the anagen phases of hair follicles. However, hair thinning occurred when the drug was discontinued, and all terminal hairs disappeared after six months. The study suggests that minoxidil may act by direct stimulation of hair follicles, but further research is needed to determine the exact mechanism of action.
