TLDR Adult mice can grow new hair from skin wounds.
In the 2007 study by Ito et al., researchers found that adult mice can regenerate new hair follicles from the epidermis during wound healing. The experiment involved inflicting wounds ranging from 1-2.25 cm² on mice, and it was observed that new hairs formed in wounds larger than 0.5 cm in diameter. These follicles developed in a manner similar to embryonic hair development and eventually looked the same as existing hair. The study used genetically labeled mice to show that the new follicles came from the inter-follicular epidermis, not existing hair bulges. The research highlighted the role of the Wnt signaling pathway in this regeneration process. The findings indicate the potential for manipulating this mechanism for hair regeneration therapies in humans.
