TLDR Platelet-rich plasma therapy helps increase hair density in male patients with hair loss but doesn't change hair thickness.
The meta-analysis titled "Effectiveness of Platelet-Rich Plasma in the Treatment of Androgenic Alopecia" analyzed 10 trials involving 555 treatment units from 318 participants. The study found that Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy significantly increased hair density in patients with Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), with a mean difference of 25.09 hairs/cm2 (p = 0.002). This effect was more pronounced in male-only trials. However, PRP treatment did not significantly affect hair diameter (p = 0.16). The study concluded that PRP therapy can effectively increase hair density in AGA patients, particularly in males, but does not significantly affect hair diameter. Despite some statistical heterogeneity due to factors like small sample sizes, patient gender, and different PRP treatment regimes, the conclusion was deemed reliable.
