Dermatologic needs of transgender and gender diverse youth: A retrospective cohort study
April 2024
in “Pediatric dermatology”
TLDR Transgender and gender diverse youth often have skin issues like acne and scarring, but few get referred to dermatologists.
The study "Dermatologic needs of transgender and gender diverse youth: A retrospective cohort study" examined the prevalence of acne, androgenic alopecia, scarring from gender-affirming procedures, and eczema in pediatric transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) patients at Boston Children's Hospital from April 2021 to April 2022. The results showed that these dermatologic concerns are common among TGD youth. However, referral rates to dermatology are low. The study also found a significant association between acne and testosterone use in this population. The authors suggest that future research should explore other dermatologic issues and the barriers to accessing dermatologic care for this historically underserved group.
