Changes of metabolic profile in men treated for androgenetic alopecia with 1 mg finasteride

The study aimed to investigate whether treatment with finasteride, a medication used for androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness), could improve metabolic syndrome features commonly associated with this condition. The study included 12 men with premature balding who were treated with finasteride for 12 months. The results showed that finasteride treatment led to expected changes in hormone levels, with a decrease in dihydrotestosterone and an increase in testosterone, androstenedione, and free testosterone index. There was also an initial increase in total cholesterol and HDL- and LDL-cholesterol, which stabilized with prolonged treatment. Additionally, there was a significant decrease in glycated hemoglobin HbA1c, indicating improved glucose metabolism regulation. Overall, the study suggests that finasteride treatment at a low dose of 1mg/day can lead to mild improvements in metabolic profile and glucose metabolism regulation in men with androgenetic alopecia.
