TLDR PCOS negatively affects women's quality of life, especially if not detected early.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder in women characterized by symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, anovulation, acne, hirsutism, and oligomenorrhea, primarily affecting women from adolescence to pre-partum. The disorder involves complex interactions between primary ovarian abnormalities, endocrine alterations, and metabolic factors, leading to metabolic disturbances and hyperandrogenism, which in turn cause ovarian cysts. Diagnosis is based on the Rotterdam criteria, which include menstrual irregularities, ultrasound findings, and hormone levels. Treatment options range from oral contraceptives and metformin for insulin resistance to laser hair removal for hirsutism and lifestyle interventions like diet and exercise. Early detection of PCOS is crucial for improving quality of life and reducing risks of cardiac issues, hair loss, infertility, and potential uterine cancer.
