August 2023 in “Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy” The study demonstrates that ivacaftor, a CFTR potentiator, protects against noise-induced hair cell loss and hearing loss by increasing Nrf2 expression and reducing oxidative stress. Using in-vivo FVB/NJ mice and in-vitro HEI-OC1 cell models, ivacaftor was shown to significantly reduce oxidative stress markers and preserve hair cell function. The protective effects of ivacaftor were found to be Nrf2-dependent, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic agent for noise-induced hearing loss. The research was supported by grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Institutes of Health, USA.

July 2019 in “Vestnik Rossiĭskoĭ akademii meditsinskikh nauk / Rossiĭskaia akademiia meditsinskikh nauk” The study analyzed the roles of genetic and non-genetic factors in the development of androgenetic alopecia (AGA) in men, involving 500 participants. It found that genetic predisposition significantly influenced AGA, but non-genetic factors such as lifestyle, diet, and environmental influences also contributed to its onset and progression. The research highlighted the multifactorial nature of AGA, emphasizing the need for a combined approach in understanding and predicting the condition. The findings suggested that personalized treatment strategies should consider both hereditary and external factors.

2 citations,
January 2023 in “Frontiers in Genetics” The study generated transgenic mice overexpressing ovine β-catenin specifically in their skin to examine its impact on hair follicle development. Out of 480 injected oocytes, 93 founder mice were produced, with 10 identified as transgenic. These mice exhibited significantly higher β-catenin mRNA and protein levels in their skin, leading to increased hair follicle density and an earlier onset of the anagen phase. The β-catenin expression was skin-specific and heritable up to the F6 generation. The findings suggest that ovine β-catenin plays a crucial role in promoting hair follicle growth, with potential applications in improving wool quality in fine-wool sheep breeds. The transgenic mice remained healthy and showed no defects.
