TLDR Zinc deficiency causes skin issues and hair loss, treatable with zinc supplements.
Zinc deficiency disorders were characterized by low serum zinc concentration and decreased alkaline phosphatase activity, leading to symptoms such as poor general condition, dermatitis on various body parts, and hair changes including alopecia. Acute deficiency presented with vesico-bullous eruptions, while chronic deficiency showed parakeratotic psoriasiform dermatitis. Severe cases required zinc therapy, often administered intravenously or orally in high doses, though long-term high doses could affect copper metabolism and were specifically indicated for acrodermatitis enteropathica.
