TLDR Nevoid basal cell carcinomas start in the skin's top layer and hair follicles.
The study observed that nevoid basal cell carcinomas originated in the epidermis and the upper part of the hair follicle, with early tumor structures resembling nonnevoid basal cell carcinomas. It noted that hand pits indicated a localized delay in basal cell maturation. Additionally, the study described the histologic features of an epithelial cyst from the palm, ectopic calcium deposition in the skin, and electron microscopic views of tumor cell masses.
