TLDR Nevoid basal cell carcinomas start in the skin and hair follicles.
The study on Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome found that nevoid basal cell carcinomas originated in the epidermis and the upper part of the hair follicle. The early proliferations and structure of these tumors were similar to nonnevoid basal cell carcinomas. The pits on the hands were thought to represent a localized delay in the maturation of basal cells. Additionally, the study described the histologic features of an epithelial cyst from the palm, ectopic calcium deposition in the skin, and electron microscopic views of the tumor cell masses.
