TLDR Glycosaminoglycan levels peak early in hair growth and decrease as the cycle progresses.
The study measured the dermal glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content in rats after hair plucking, which reinitiated their hair cycle. It was found that GAG levels peaked on the 6th day of the anagen stage and decreased during the catagen stage, remaining similar in the telogen stage. A similar pattern was observed in the number of mast cells around hair follicles. The 0.5 M fraction identified as hyaluronic acid showed concentration changes that paralleled the total dermal GAG throughout the hair growth cycle.
