TLDR Biotin is essential for healthy skin and claws in pigs.
In this 1984 study, piglets weaned at 3 weeks were fed diets with varying levels of egg white (1%, 2%, 4%, and 8%) to induce biotin deficiency. The study found that severe deficiency symptoms, such as significant hair loss and brittle, crusty horn on the claws, were particularly evident in groups with higher egg white content (4% and 8%). Histological examination revealed necrosis in the stratum corneum of the skin and claws, with reduced or absent ATP-ase activity in the stratum spinosum in severe cases. These findings, consistent with previous studies, indicated that biotin is crucial for maintaining a healthy and resilient epidermis.
