TLDR Skin issues like hirsutism, acne, and acanthosis nigricans are common in PCOS and linked to hormone and metabolic changes.
This study investigated the prevalence of dermatologic manifestations in 53 Egyptian women with PCOS compared to 50 non-PCOS controls. The findings revealed a significantly higher prevalence of hirsutism, androgenic alopecia (AGA), acne, and acanthosis nigricans (AN) in the PCOS group. Specifically, hirsutism was associated with higher levels of total and free testosterone, showing a strong positive correlation. Acne in PCOS patients was more common in younger women, while AN was linked to higher anthropometrics, insulin resistance, and serum prolactin levels. The study concludes that cutaneous manifestations are common in PCOS and can provide clinical insights, with androgen levels influencing hirsutism and metabolic factors contributing to AN.
